D a s a n i

The name was scrawled in her mothers own elaborate handwriting, and had been hand carved with great care. Radraven's fingers traced each curve of every letter. She hadn't know her father all that well before he had been plucked from their lives yet again, but it didn't mean she didn't love him any less. What she knew of him, and the time she was able to spend with him, Dasani was an honorable man. He would give anyone the shirt off of his back, and he was loyal and protective of his family. Inwardly, Radraven knew that her mother wasn't quite the same. How could anyone be the same when you lost your soul mate?

The shrill ringing of her cell phone cut her concentration short. Removing the slender device from the pocket of her leather coat, she flipped it open and glanced at the caller ID. It was an unknown number that called twice in the past hour. Sighing softly, she decided to answer it this time.

"Yes?"

“Took you long enough to answer the phone… Radraven.” The voice that spoke was an old, familiar voice, smooth yet masculine with a hint of a raw edge that made it just enough sexy and a lot of dangerous. It was the voice of an emerald eyed, flaxen haired angel with the soul of a devil from the deepest pits of hell. It was Kain Angelus Everlynd.

About a year ago, an incident had occurred where his old home out in the forest had been burnt to the ground, his offices shredded to pieces and all out war had broke out between a few elders on the council who had decided to rid their world of the blond vampire who threatened to take over everything they had controlled. Now it would seem that he had come back.

“Before you say anything I want to say that this is strictly business. I have a proposition to make you which entails a great deal of money.” There was a pause at the end of the line before he started again. “I’m having a little meeting here in Sanguine, one that will take all of my time and attention. I want you to watch after my daughter, Henrietta. Come to The Fairmont Hotel by 2 am today and ask the front desk for access to the penthouse suite… they already know your coming…. We look forward to seeing you.”

With that the phone hung up, leaving only silence on the other end of the line. Would she come? Perhaps not for him, but Kain would bet money that she would come for Henrietta’s sake…

Radraven had long since removed herself from the City of Sanguine and had gone in search of her "roots" as they were. There had been speculation that Scourge had been her father, and she wanted to know the truth. Truth was, Dasani was her real father, not Scourge, but reguardless of that fact, she had kept the gift she had been given by the member of the fallen Sanctus family. It appeared to be a beaten up black and purple teddy bear. In reality, the apparent stuffed animal was just as vicious if not more ruthless than any Demon she had ever had the chance of running into. Running her fingers through her long black hair, Radraven slid the cell phone back into the pocket of her coat and shifted her oddly colores eyes back to her fathers grave. Her right eye was the same neon green as her mothers, and the left she had inherited the bright cyan color of her father. Reguardless of her different color eyes, she was still quite the beauty.

Obviously not as much as her mother, but give or take a few centuries, and Radraven would give the infamous Draven a run for her money. Glancing down at the gold and diamond watch on her left wrist she had little time to get to the hotel. She knew why Kain was calling her for this propisition. Radraven had grown quite fond of Henrietta years ago when Cian had been around. Kain had grown to be a different man the night Cian was killed. Maybe he knew that Radraven had been the one to pull the trigger in the end. Either case, Kain was no longer the man she had grown to care deeply for. He was...something else entirely. Time changed and so did everyone, what would make them so different?

Pressing her fingertips to her lips, Radraven touched her father's name plate one last time before turning away from his tomb.

~`~`~`~

It wasn't long until she reached the Fairmont Hotel. Glancing up, her eyes caught sight of a familiar figure peering down through the large floor to ceiling windows that over looked the entrance to the hotel, and she was positivie that it was Kain. Holding her head regally high, Radraven pushed her way through the large glass doors and approached the front desk.

"May I help you?"

"I'm expected in the penthouse suite."

"Oh, but of course!" The overly excited clerk gave the most fake smile that Radraven had ever seen anyone give. The woman was obviously jealous. Radraven could smell it radiating off her in waves. "Shall I page Mr. Everlynd to let him know you've arrived?"

"No, that's quite alright. He knows I'm here." She snatched the keycard out from the womans grasp and turned for the elevators without so much as a backwards glance.

The ride to the twenty forth floor was just a bit tedious. She would have preferred to take the stairs, but the penthouse suite that Kain used to frequent in Sanguine didn't have access to the staircase. Why she would never know. The elevator beeped and the doors opened with a hiss of compressed air. Radraven stepped out and was almost imediately greeted by Kain's smug expression.

"Let me start by saying that I don't want your money, Kain. You know I would take care of your daughter, reguardless of the relationship or lack there of that is between us. So, I find it highly offensive that you would even think to offer me cash for this."

He stood there, hip cocked and a half grin on his face, deep lines running beside his mouth that gave him harsh elegance, his eyes seemed slightly sunken in… and yet he maintained the look of a graceful hunter. Whereas before he only looked like he had the potential to kill; now he looked like he would in a heartbeat. In Kain’s hand was held a scotch glass that was half full of a thick red liquid, his long piano players fingers were tipped with thick nails that pressed against the glass. Skip the wine that offered little satisfaction, he had gone straight for the blood of a man who had died highly intoxicated, giving Kain the closest he would ever get to being drunk.

“The offer was a formality, I’m a business man after all… we don’t change our stripes.” Was all he said at Radraven’s unorthodox greeting. “Come in, come in, Henrietta fell asleep while waiting earlier. That girl still has no sense for time.”

Kain turned his back and walked down a wide hallway that was floored in a dark green marble. His long blonde seemed to have grown in the past year, the tips swaying across his ass despite the fact that it was bound back with a black tie. The man entered into the main entertaining room, which was also decorated in greens, gold, and warm browns.

From a large sofa with its back facing the two as they entered into the room, a soft rustling could be heard as it foretold the rising of one sleepy looking vampire. Henrietta turned her body toward the direction of the two, her milky gray eyes seeming to be riveted on the spot where they stopped.

“Big sister Radraven! I knew you would come! Father said you wouldn’t, but I told him you would for sure!” The young looking vampire stood from the couch and quickly made her way around the sofa and toward Radraven, whom she wrapped her arms around and buried her small against.

Henrietta was a special case… She was completely blind in both eyes and even the change didn’t fix it. However, that didn’t make her function any different than anyone else. You see, Henrietta’s other senses, smell, hearing, and that sixth sense all vampires seemed to have kept her on the right path and probably a lot more aware of everything then someone with their sight.

Radraven immediately scooped the girl up in her arms and held her tightly.

Big sister Radraven! I knew you would come! Father said you wouldn’t, but I told him you would for sure!”

She couldn't help the smile that curved the corners of her lips. She had always had a soft spot for Henrietta, and Kain knew it, he flaunted it for his personal pleasure.

"I have always told you, Henrietta, that no matter what I would always come for you." Radraven said softly, letting her fingers run through the girls blond curls and brushing back a few strubbon strand that had dared to cling to the girls face. "Now, it is nearly Dawn, young lady. You should be settling down and getting some rest."

Not wanting to her the child's protests, she carried her towards her own room that was set just off of the main living area. Radraven set Henrietta down in the rather large bed for a girl her size, and tucked her beneath the thick blankets.

"We will have all the time to play after sunset. There is no need for you to worry, I'm not going anywhere, but in the next room with your father." She leaned down and pressed the barest kiss against the child's forehead before standing up and heading towards the door. She stopped for a moment and glanced back to her over her shoulder. "Dream well, Henrietta." Gently, Radraven closed the door behind her and turned her differently colored eyes towards Kain.

The girl, who was probably a couple hundred years old, knew better then protest. At this moment, she was content enough to obey Radraven and let herself be carried into her room where she was put into her bed and tucked in… Before the door was shut, the little vampire muttered a small goodnight, closed her eyes and drifted into the deep sleep of the living dead.

As the door clicked shut, Kain was in the process of downing his latest glass of blood before setting the crustal glass on the high table that butted itself against one wall. A tiny drop of blood had welled up at the corner of his mouth and threatened to drip down until his bright red tongue snaked out and licked it away.

He finally turned his emerald eyes toward the woman in the living room. “She’d have no one else, it had to be you.”

Kain turned and motioned for Radraven to follow him into his study, which was down a short hallway and through a pair of double oak doors. Once inside the lavishly decorated study, Kain plopped down on one of the two leather sofas that were positioned in front of the massive desk.

“Take a seat, take a seat” the tall vampire insisted before starting into another topic. “Anything that Henrietta needs or wants can be paid with that credit card on that desk over there. There are also keys to my new Aston Martin Vanquish… Since I’m pretty sure you still drive that motorcycle, you’ll need something more suitable for Henrietta…”

Kain sighed greatly, his chest heaving in and out as his hand came up and rubbed at the bridge of his finely chiseled nose. If it was possible, it looked at as though the normally cunning, cruel, and calm vampire had aged in the one year he had been in hiding.

Radraven merely nodded. She knew that there was no arguing with Kain when it came to his daughers needs. She considered Henrietta the closest thing she would ever have to a child, and agreed with him at least when it came to her.

"Look, Kain, despite our difference of personality and tastes, I want you to know that you are doing a wonderful job with Henrietta. I don't meant it as a cruel comment so please don't take offense to my words. I personally do not know what I would have done had I been in your shoes. While you were gone, I also found some intriguing information. Before you even ask, yes, I was keeping tabs on you and what had happened to drasticly that made you leave Sanguine in the first place."

Casually, Radraven crossed her jean clad legs and shrugged herself out of her motorcycle jacket. "After my fathers death by the hands of the former leader of the Corpus Clan, my mother went into a rather deep sleep. She hasn't been awoken from it yet either by the way. Nika is now the current Vitae to the Requiem Bloodline in my mothers absense. And we all know very well, that Nika can be quite the ruthless bitch. She didn't take kindly to my presence on the Council and began raming me, as well as you from conspiring against the Council and he City of Sanguine. As a result, we were both run out of town and our homes destroyed."

He never looked at her as she spoke; in fact he kept his eyes riveted on the dark windows across him behind the large desk. His eyes never blinked and he seemed to chew on his bottom lip, looking lost in thought or in a reality that no one could reach. As the last syllable from Radraven’s mouth ended on the air, Kain still did not stir.

It wasn’t until about two minutes, two agonizingly silent minutes that the tall vampire finally spoke. “Everything I had worked for, everything I had acquired in this lifetime, the priceless pieces of countless civilizations lost… I lost nearly everything in that fire, precious documents, and hordes of cash… And I nearly lost my heart. Henrietta was nearly killed in that fire…”

Kain finally turned his gaze toward the woman, his eyes seeming to swim underneath their emerald depths, like a large serpent coiling around itself. His jaw set into a hard line, the lines around his eyes seemed to deepen. “Anyone would be foolish to return in just one year… I am hoping to catch them off guard… I’ve kept my presence to a minimum and used a few precautions to maintain that… I don’t want you interfering with what I came here to do… Just watch Henrietta.”

Kain stood then, his arms bending and his hands resting on his belt that kept his lighter gray slacks synched tight. He took a few steps toward the massive window and stood there, looking out over the city that he had once craved so much to control. It had been close, his dominion over his city… Once upon a time he had been a warlord, ruthless and harsh to his subjects… Once upon a time he had ruled ancient nations, often indirectly as a shadow behind the king… sometimes directly. Any immortal who had lived through the Assyrian invasion of the known ancient world knew exactly who had led that army, that nation, that people to greatness.

“These councils of foolish immortals have forgotten what fear is, have forgotten the terror and primordial live style we have come from… They have forgotten what … we… are. We are monsters!” Kain spun at that time, his eyes fixed on Radraven, his mouth curling into a snarl as he spoke. “We are creatures of the darkness, closer to the beast then we will ever be to humans… Our kind has forgotten that we are meant to rule!”

Kain lowered his shoulders then, his eyes growing less fierce… He wandered toward his desk and let his hand coast over the polished wood. A faint smile ghosted his lips. “That’s what I used to think anyways… Now I could care less… Now… I only have one goal in mind, to shake the foundation of the councils… to upset their lives just as they have upset mine. Bedsides…” He casted a glance at Radraven, “What type of father would I be if I allowed this cruelty toward my family.”

"I'm not going to step in your way Kain, as long as you promise me one thing."

Radraven stood from her seat and crossed that distance between them with the same deadly grace that all Vampires possessed. Her eyes caught his and they swirled with an inner gray smoke. She was Ascended just like the rest of the Bloodlines.

"I ask for what we used to have, I ask that you swear to me anything left that you may hold dear to your heart that you leave my mother be."

He looked down upon her, his body stiff as a statue from some old world temple. Never once did his emerald eyes falter from Radraven’s differently colored ones. His breathing was still and even, only once did it seem his nostrils flare, taking in the scent of the woman that stood before him. Even the smell of death that hung around their kind was different for each and every one… to him; the scent of Radraven was like the sweetest of fruits… something he wanted to sink his teeth into.

Instinctively his hand came out and brushed gently against the woman’s jaw line. The look in his eyes spoke his want to take her lips with his own… yet he didn’t. The tall blonde merely answered, “I will not harm your mother… You have my word.”

He took his away then and backed away, and in spinning on his heel, began to head for the doors that would lead back into the main hall way. As his hand rested on the latch, he called out, “You can pick whichever room, help yourself to anything here.”

When Kain left the room, Radraven wanted to beat her head against the wall in rapid succession. How could he still affect her like that? Simply. She hadn't gotten Kain A. Everlynd out of her damn system yet. Even though Dawn was rapidly approaching, she wasn't quite ready to settle down just yet. Leaving the office rather quietly, Radraven peeked in on Henrietta. She sat on the edge of the child's bed and lovingly stroked the hair from her face.

She had always wanted a child of her own, but had never been around Sanguine long enough to find a suitable father, or any one man that had ever taken Kain's place in her heart, despite the things that they had done to one another in the past. The past was past, why not let it be and start something new? Because she didn't think Kain wanted her anymore. How could he after she had left Sanguine without a word and returned to find him a bitter man? There were some things in the world that not even a Vampire could fix.

Had it been any other time, he would have taken her then and there, even with the dawn swiftly approaching. If only things could have been the way they were before, if only he could get over the horror he had witnessed during those final days he had spent in Sanguine… He would never tell Radraven what had really happened. That something that he was harboring down in the depths of his soul, the only course that kept him existing was to exact revenge upon those who had nearly ruined his family. The deep scars that not only were upon him, but were also upon Henrietta… and nothing could wash them away.

Once inside the completely sealed suite that was Kain’s sleeping quarters, he wasted no time in taking off all of his clothing and slipping between the silk sheets of his bed. Before the sun fully set this evening, he would rise before anyone else and make his move. He knew that they wouldn’t worry when he didn’t show up… Just in case something went array… Kain had left a letter in the car that he left for the girls to use. Inside would detail all the account information and access codes for locks and such that would lead the location of all his treasures and properties.

The clock was ticking, and yet still the vampire could not will himself into the restful sleep that his kind needed. Merely staring at the ceiling, the tall vampire decided to finally just rise from his bed and make his way to the massive master bathroom. There he began to fill the bathtub with scolding hot water and slipped himself in.

Henrietta cried out in her sleep. The sound was so painful, so agonized that Radraven knew something serious had happened to her and to Kain after her disappearance from Sanguine. Clutching the whimpering girl in her arms protectively and whispering to her in a language long forgetten, she comforted the hundred year old child. The love that Radraven had for Henrietta and for Kain went beyond anything she had even known. It was beyoned the moral comprehension of the word. She could prod into the childs thoughts, but it went against Radraven's very nature. If they wanted their secrets known, they would speak them.

Rocking Henrietta in her arms, the girl finally fell back asleep. Easing her with great care back beneath the covers, Radraven stood, holding herself regally almost like the heiress that she was. Closing the door quietly behind her, she made her way towards Kain's room. Hesitating at the door for a moment, she thought about what she was going to do. She didn't really know why she was standing in front of his door with her hand poisted to knock. Something had compelled her to this very room, and Radraven had absolutely no idea what it was.

He could feel her, just outside the door… It was odd, how the hair on the back of his neck stood up whenever that woman came near. He stood from the bath, letting the water drip from his body as he reached for a deep green colored bathrobe. Shrugging into it, and tying the sash loosely around his lean middle, he padded softly toward the door.

Before Radraven had a chance to knock on the door, Kain grabbed the latch and swung the door open. His eyes rested upon her face, looking over it, every shadow, every hallow, and then fixed on her eyes. Without saying a word, he stepped aside, giving room for Radraven to enter into the room if she still wanted it.

Kain felt as though he had to say something, “I heard Henrietta… Thank you for calming her down…”

Looking like the lion god from her deepest fantasies, Radraven couldn't help as her eyes drifted over the gaping robe that was tied loosely around his lean and muscled mid-section. The Requiem in her, as well as the woman, reacted at the mere sight of bare flesh, but she was quick to camp a firm hand down upon it. Taking a steadying breath, Radraven stepped into the room.

Into the belly of the beast, she thought. And out of the monster's ass.

"There is no need to thank me for calming Henrietta down. I have grown rather fond of her, and there is nothing that I wouldn't do for her. It seems as though my maternal instincts are getting a practice session."
